Placements: An Overview

The iTeach programme is designated as an 11-16 PGCE with opportunities for enhanced experience at 16-18.

Students will spend a minimum of 14 weeks in schools (fast track) and up to 24 weeks in total, working mostly in 11-16 age range classrooms. To do this, students will need to understand and use key vocabulary, be familiar with key questions and experiences in each curriculum subject and be aware of the need for their own continuing professional development throughout their teaching careers. Students will be expected to learn from the effective practice of others, particularly their assigned mentors in school to improve their own teaching through evaluation, to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and to become flexible, enthusiastic professionals prepared for a whole career in education.

This will mean that students are encouraged to become reflective practitioners, creative in their approach and open to new ideas. Through their own participation in real and relevant activities designed to generate emotional engagement, imagination, creativity, interaction, critical autonomy and diversity, students will pass on this principle to others. Students will learn of the professional responsibilities and relationships of the teacher and will be aware of their position as role models. As such they will learn to challenge stereotyped views, champion equal opportunities and challenge bullying, harassment, racism or unfairness.

The 'fast track' arrangement for placements is two blocks of 5 weeks and one block of 4 weeks although placements and/or the number of placements may vary according to the needs of individual students. Blocks of 7, 7 and 10 weeks (subject to change) are undertaken by students who are not on the fast track route into teaching. The teaching experience will be done in at least two different schools or teaching environments.
